How To Play Roulette

Play Roulette Online

One of the most played casino games in the world comes from France. Roulette has been played in this European country since the 18th century, and it’s probably based on an older Italian game known as Biribi. The popularity of online casinos has not changed gamblers’ preferences, which means that roulette is still a trendy casino game. You can tell this by checking several random casinos. They will likely have at least one roulette variant in their offers.

Even though playing this game is not difficult, one must understand all rules associated with the different types of roulette games to learn how to play roulette properly. The good news is that most of these rules are identical, and there are some minor changes in different variants.

How To Play Roulette – The Basics

The wheel is the centerpiece of the roulette table. At the beginning of each round, players must place at least one bet at the table to participate in the game. It’s worth mentioning that there are multiple betting options here and that you can place multiple bets at once. After that, the croupier spins the wheel, and the participants wait for the outcome. The wheel has 37 or 38 pockets (depending on the variant). Your task as a player is to predict the spin’s outcome to win money. Of course, the payouts depend on the type of bet you have chosen.

Types of Bets

Generally speaking, there are two types of bets in roulette – inside and outside. However, software developers have been unleashing their creativity and innovativeness in recent years, letting players bet on the unique outcomes of this game. You can read the rules in each online roulette game to learn more about these special bets. Now let’s get back to the common inside and outside bets.

Inside Bets

Single/Straight – there’s no need to explain this in detail. When players opt for it, they are betting on a single number.

Split – this time, the stake goes on two horizontally or vertically adjacent numbers like 2 and 3 or 23 and 26, for example.

Street – with this bet, you can wager money on three subsequent numbers in a horizontal line like 31, 32, and 33, for instance.

Square/Corner – choose this option if you think that the ball will end up on one of the four numbers meeting at one corner, like 23, 24, 26, and 27, for instance.

Double Street/Six Line – in this case, players believe that the final result will show one of the six numbers that create two horizontal lines like 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, or 30, for example.

Trio – this is a three-number bet that includes at least one zero like 0, 2, and 3.

First Four – you can also wager on 0, 1, 2, and 3

Basket – this bet is available to those playing roulette games with a double zero. In this case, they will bet on an outcome that includes one of these numbers – 0, 00, 1, 2, or 3.

Outside Bets

Suppose you are a fan of a more conservative approach to gambling and look for better odds of winning (which also means smaller payouts). In that case, you can choose some of the outside bets.

1 to 18 (Low/Manque) or 19 to 36 (High/Passe) – landing a number within the specified range will help you win a prize.

Even or Odd (Pair ou Impair) – another option that doesn’t require detailed explanation – bet that the number will be odd or even.

Red or Black (Rouge ou Noir) – betting on the number’s color.

Dozen Bet – there are three dozen numbers in roulette games (from 1 to 12, from 13 to 24, and from 25 to 36). You can select one of these dozens and place your bet thanks to this option.

Column Bet – this bet allows players to bet that the number will be in a specific vertical column consisting of 12 numbers like 3, 6, 9, 12, all the way to 36, for example.

You can’t learn how to play roulette without understanding the different versions of this thrilling game. After many years of existence, we now have three versions played by almost all players.

European Roulette

For many people, this is the regular version of the game. In this case, we have a wheel that includes one green pocket (one zero). In other words, players should expect 37 pockets in European roulette. Interestingly, the house edge in this version is just 2.7% making it very attractive, especially among beginners.

American Roulette

The Americans have created their own version of the game, but it’s not much different from the original. Almost every online casino today has at least one American roulette game. We’ll start by saying that it has a relatively big house edge of 5.26%. The main reason for that is the wheel which this time includes 38 pockets, and you will find two green pockets displaying a zero and a double zero. In theory, it’s better to play European roulette because the house edge is lower. Still, the extra pocket gives you another chance to place single number bets for big payouts.

French Roulette

The third most popular type of roulette is French roulette, and it comes with the same wheel as the one used in the European version. Thanks to the two special rules that are optional, players can lower the house edge to 1.35%. First of all, we have the En Prison rule, which participants can use when the ball ends up in the green pocket and have placed an outside bet. In this case, they can keep the bet for an additional round without the possibility to add another bet or change the existing one. In the next turn, if the ball lands where you have predicted the first time, you will get the bet back.

The other rule is called La Partage. You can benefit from it in the same situation as before – only when you have an outside bet and the ball has ended up in the green pocket. This time, you should not expect an additional spin. Instead of this, you get half of your stake back.

Other Popular Roulette Versions

As we said before, the rise of online roulette games has allowed developers to showcase their creativity by providing unique versions of casino games. There are literally dozens of versions on the market, but some are more popular than others. So, in addition to European, American, and French roulette games, you can try the Multi Casino, Super, Chinese, Instant, Multi Wheel, Double Ball, and California versions.

Roulette Tips

It’s not easy to provide roulette tips or talk about strategies in this game because it’s an actual game of chance. You can’t affect the outcome of the spin. Still, there are a few general tips that may help you.

First and foremost, since there are so many versions, you should rest assured that you know the rules of the specific version you have selected. This is the best way to increase the chances of winning. While discussing the rules, you should also check the limits of bets (minimum and maximum) and payouts.

Players should set a realistic budget and stick to it. They should never gamble money that they can’t afford to lose. Another good piece of advice is to practice roulette for free. This is possible thanks to online casinos. Namely, most gambling websites allow registered players to try the demo versions of their favorite games. In fact, some of them are available to unregistered users. Doing this will provide a better feel and understanding of the title without risking your money.

There are some roulette strategies too, but our advice is to use them cautiously because roulette is all about luck. For example, we have the Martingale system, which is also used in other casino games. It’s a straightforward strategy that advises players to increase their bets after every loss. You can’t try this risky approach if your budget is small. On top of that, you will risk a lot of money for a relatively low (theoretical) return.

If you want to play safe, you may want to check the Fibonacci system. You have to bet by adding the last two bets together in this case. Once again, a strategy like this requires a lot of money, which casual players can’t afford. Lastly, we would like to mention the D’Alembert system. It’s a modification of the Martingale system where you have to use one unit after a loss (no need to double the bet). Also, after a win, you don’t go back to the initial bet; you just decrease the stake by one unit.

Without any doubt, roulette is an exciting casino game worth trying regardless of the version you pick. Almost every online casino has this game on offer, so it shouldn’t be challenging to find a good gambling site with bonuses to spice up your roulette experience. Learn the rules of the specific version you have chosen to get the most from it.
